Functional Skills is made up of five different levels, three of which are entry level, leading up the Functional Skills Level 1 and Level 2.

The five levels are taught to offer you clear progression in your understanding and delivery of the English language.

Entry Level 1, 2 and 3

The purpose of Functional Skills English Entry Level qualifications is to demonstrate the ability at an appropriate level to read, write, speak, listen and communicate in English, and to apply this knowledge and these skills in familiar situations.

The qualifications will cover:

  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Communication Skills

Level 1, 2

Level 1 and 2 Functional Skills in English are qualifications aimed at preparing learners for work, study and life. By completing these two courses, you will be able to fully demonstrate your ability to read, write, speak, listen and communicate in the English language at a suitable level.

You will be able to apply this knowledge and skills in a range of areas, including in the workplace, everyday life in the UK and if you would like to progress onto further studies.

The qualifications will cover:

Functional Skills qualifications are ideal for learners who wish to develop practical, everyday skills and understanding of the English language. If you simply want to become more confident with your English, use it for work purposes, or pursue further studies at University, this course is for you.

Functional Skills are fundamental to the successful completion of various qualifications and frameworks you may wish to undertake in the future.

No prior qualifications or experience are necessary to enrol on the Level 1 Functional Skills Mathematics course. You only need to:

  • Be aged 16 or over
  • Complete a Functional Skills assessment to establish the appropriate level

The course is delivered in person at our Sheffield campus or online. 

The courses are six weeks in duration, and support through dedicated tutors is provided throughout your studies with us.

The courses run every four weeks, so you can start on a date that suits you and fits around your existing commitments.
